Welcome to the first in a series of articles covering the months leading up to the release of the film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack on March 12, 1988, as told through anime magazines and books of the time. I’ll be providing scans of the relevant pages, translations of the text, plus extra comparisons and analysis as needed.
As I’ll only be covering magazines from my personal collection, this will in no way be a comprehensive list. That said, I’m also currently seeking out more old issues for this project, so there may be some delay in articles as I attempt to track them down.
Our first magazine is the August 1987 issue of Newtype. Newtype is a monthly magazine that began publication in 1985, covering anime, video games, sci-fi, and tokusatsu among other topics, and is still being printed in Japan today. It features some beautiful art and double page spreads.
In spring of A.D. 1988, a new Gundam will appear!
The fourth Gundam movie is quietly but powerfully progressing. Amuro Ray and Char Aznable, two Newtypes, are the main characters of this work! The target release is March 1988!
Let’s make “Gundam” into a movie again!
It was exactly one year ago in the August issue of this Newtype magazine [hereafter NT] that we called out to our readers. The 6000 “movie you wish for” questionnaires submitted to NT conveyed to the producers the fans’ unwavering passion for Gundam. Yes. Now, a new movie version of Gundam has reared its head, and slowly but surely it has begun to move forward. As of the release of this August issue, no official announcement has been made yet. Therefore, the full story will be revealed in next month’s issue, but with the cooperation of those involved, NT will publish here the latest materials that are currently available!
The official title of the new movie has not yet been decided. This month, let’s call it the tentative title “New Gundam”. The main characters of this “New Gundam” are two people who once fought to the death in the Mobile Suit Gundam television series and movie trilogy. They are Amuro Ray and Char Aznable. New possibilities for humanity – people who can understand each other instantly. Two warriors who embody the concept of “Newtype” will once again become the main characters.
And so, they finally fight to decide it all…What will be the future of humanity?
Original story, director, and script writer: Yoshiyuki Tomino. Character Designer: Hiroyuki Kitazume. Animation director: Hiroyuki Kitazume & Hidetoshi Omori. Art director: Shigemi Ikeda. Producer: Kenji Uchida. Planning and production: Sunrise. Planning: Shochiku, Sotsu Agency, Nagoya Television, and Bandai. Distributed by Shochiku Co., Ltd.
Production is progressing at a rapid pace with the scheduled release date in March 1988. There are only 8 more months until we can meet Amuro and Char again. Let’s look forward to it!
Re–GZ (リ・ガズィ)
Re-GZ is a mass-produced Zeta Gundam developed by the Earth Federation Forces. However, because priority was given to attack power, the ability to change into Waverider has been removed. It is a machine developed in a different series from the Zeta Gundam mass-produced version Zeta Plus, which was independently developed by Karaba. At the beginning of the movie, Amuro rides this Re-GZ and fights Char, however… (The coloring of this illustration was created by NT, as the coloring in the main story has not been officially decided.)
The next page features some more information about the characters, with some early concept art. I’m not sure if the inconsistent colors came from the production team itself, or if it was another case of the Newtype editors making their best guess, as stated with the Re-GZ illustration previously.
U.C.0093 Amuro is back!
15 years have passed since the “One Year War” in Universal Century 0079. Amuro was imprisoned by the Federation Forces, who considered Newtypes dangerous, and he joined the anti-Earth Federation organization AEUG. After various experiences, a wild tiger awakens.
Amuro Ray (アムロ・レイ)
Former RX-78 Gundam pilot. Hero of the One Year War. Newtype warrior. Although he is 30 years old in this movie, his facial expression retains the radiance of a young boy, so he is an eternal youth.
Hathaway Noa (ハサウェイ・ノア)
A boy born to Bright Noa, the captain of the White Base, known as the Newtype unit during the One Year War, and Mirai Yashima, the helmsman. He somehow resembles his father.
Chan Agi (チェーン・アギ)
New movie character. Earth Federation Forces female soldier.
NEW Gundam
The latest mobile suit that Amuro pilots in the second half of the story. The silhouette is similar to the RX-78, but there are many new features. Unusual for previous Gundam types, the casing of the head Vulcan cannon is an ejecting type rather than a combustion type. This still is from the teaser trailer. This is an incredible trailer where the main body moves on the 2s, and the movement of the cartridges being ejected is full animation* (!). The key animation is by Toshimitsu Kobayashi, and the animation director is Hidetoshi Omori!
[*Full animation refers to animating “on the 1s”, or that for each second of animation, there are 24 frames drawn. Animating “on the 2s” is 12 frames for every second, and “on the 3s” is 8 frames for every second. The cut from the trailer referenced in this section can be viewed below, starting at around 0:10]
Gyunei Guss (ギュネイ・ガス)
New character. Has the same military uniform as Char.
Quess Paraya (クェス・パラヤ)
New character. She is the heroine of the movie.
Char Aznable (シャア・アズナブル)
Son of Newtype proponent Zeon Deikun. He appears for the first time in six years after going missing at the end of Zeta Gundam. He is 33 years old now.
15 years of love and hate burns in the clash between Amuro and Char!
Amuro Ray.
On the day Gundam RX-78 stood on the ground for the first time, the boy clung to the cockpit with beastly eyes…
Char Aznable.
In order to avenge his father, the “Red Comet” hid his real name behind a mask and poured his passion into his war exploits and becoming a snake in the grass to the Zabi family…
When Mobile Suit Gundam first appeared, what attracted many fans was the contrast between the main character Amuro and the antagonist Char. It is true that Gundam has various charms. Profound yet innovative battles involving giant humanoid mobile suits. Battlefield scenes reminiscent of foreign war movies. The reality of civilians cowering in fear. The characters are expertly drawn, from the beautiful to the gruesome side characters…each one of them is a wonderful factor that makes Gundam a reality.
The first Gundam movement came about from the TV series in 1979 to the completion of the movie trilogy in 1982. Three years later, that power brought two sequels to the world: Zeta Gundam and Gundam ZZ. Zeta has the serious and stressful drama that Gundam had, and ZZ is a work that brings to the forefront the charm of robot action. However, both of these two shows lacked the exciting and heart-pounding atmosphere that Gundam had in the past. The theme of each work was brilliantly accomplished, but that was the world of Zeta and ZZ. It was different from the worldview and intrigue of Gundam.
What is the reason for this? This proves that the true essence of “Gundam” is a coming-of-age story between Amuro and Char, and it is neither a stressful drama nor an action drama. Elements are different from essence.
And next spring, a new theatrical version of Gundam will be released in March 1988. The time is Universal Century 0093. The main character is Amuro Ray. The antagonist is Char Aznable. Yes, the two people who have condensed the essence of “Gundam” into their entire being will meet again on the battlefield. Why does Char, who has been missing since Universal Century 0088 after leaving the AEUG, once again bare his fangs at Amuro, who once fought alongside him!? What is his purpose!? How has his thinking changed!? And does Amuro have a chance of winning against his strongest enemy!? Is his Newtype ability still intact!?
At this stage, since the official announcement has not yet been made, we would like to refrain from announcing the specific story. The one thing we can say is that this movie depicts the conclusion to 15 years of Amuro and Char’s youth (the passage of time in the story, Universal Century 0079-0093). As for the new mobile suits, the Re-GZ (meaning replicated Zeta Gundam, the main mobile suit of the Federation Forces), which is the supplementary poster of this issue of NT*, and the NEW Gundam (name undecided) appear as Amuro’s mobile suits. The brave figure of this new Gundam, which reproduces the beautiful lines of the old RX-78 Gundam, will be shown in the first trailer as early as late July.
[*My copy of this issue did not come with the poster so I can’t provide my own scan, but here’s a photo of it from Mandarake]
The scene where the Vulcan cannon on the Gundam’s head fires for just over 10 seconds is a masterpiece! It’s a powerful trailer that heightens expectations for the new film. Be deeply moved once again!
Char, your youth isn’t over yet
Zeon’s king of the skies, the “Red Comet”… the AEUG’s leader, Quattro Bageena… he has always bared his fangs at the people of Earth, so what will be his next target?
The final two pages of Char’s Counterattack related content in this issue is a Gundam timeline, as determined by the Newtype staff using information available at the time. Some information here is inaccurate based on what we know now, however I’ve translated this as it appears to the best of my ability.
Complete Gundam Chronology
From the Western calendar to the Universal Century. The history of the Gundam world is the history of humanity’s expansion into space and the awakening of Newtypes. Here is the path to the new Gundam!!
