My friend GD (@genericdecay) asked me to help translate a section of this doujinshi anthology, which features many artists who worked on Garma/Charma related books earlier in the 1980s. All photos in this post are courtesy of them, as I don’t own this book myself.

What’s Gundam

In this section, some of the contributors give their opinions on the Gundam series and what it means to them.

As always with artist names, I have romanized them to the best of my ability, however without specified readings of the kanji provided, I can only use my best guess.

To think that its groundbreaking and interesting content was initially criticized and considered so minor, but I believe it was a pioneering work that is truly representative of modern robot anime.

(If it had ended there, it would have been a masterpiece. Either way, I still can’t draw the characters well.)

★Garmako Tateno ↗

I, Shimogatani Pix, am from Hiroshima Prefecture, and in the Hiroshima dialect we call Garma “Ruma-sama.” However, it seems that I shouldn’t say this in front of Tateno-sensei. Why? I think it’s because I end up like this. I want to know the truth. That’s all.

Hello, this is Mirai Modo. I used to like Gundam, but it’s an embarrassing memory now. Why am I not embarrassed to say that I like Yamato? That’s all.

I love Stan Hansen now~.

You could say it’s a little late to talk about Gundam, but I’m a unbelievable fan who doesn’t even care about the other characters as long as Garma is there. Oh, but I like Icelina. She’s cute and absent-minded like a flower. I can feel the love in Char’s teasing, because Garma-sama is a special character. I want to take him to the most beautiful place and protect him… I definitely won’t let yaoi happen to him!! Stupid Char. ← What is this? 💦

We made a book in this day and age with such wonderful contributors (excluding me 💦). I am so grateful to Mari, Mako, and Kama-sensei. I love them! Please keep up the great work! ♡

⭐ “Gundam” is to me is synonymous with “creative spark”. The spirit, power, and passion that evoked by the name “Gundam” is the origin for my work and my doujin activities, including all the characters and previous works. It’s become my “encouragement”. I can’t say I’m the biggest Gundam fan in the world, but everything I do now is thanks to Garma-sama. I don’t want to put it in the past tense just yet. Yeah…

Rio Yagizawa

I… I…was watching Zeta Gundam and couldn’t help but rethink what a great character 20-year-old Char is. Sorry Makoto-chan☆ Gundam was my youth ♡

…Well, that’s how it is ♡

When Makoto-chan told me to write something about Gundam, I asked, “Huh? Something about Garma?” So that’s it. Hahaha
